5 classics of Malaysian cuisine

Malaysian cuisine offers the best of all worlds in Asian food. Reflecting the ethnic diversity of the country itself, Malaysian food has distinct influences from Chinese, Indian, and Thai, and is very similar to Indonesian food. There are also distinct cultural influences in Malaysian cuisine which add further variety and interest to popular dishes and promise many exciting regional variations.

#1 Satay

You could say that satay is the Malaysian equivalent of kebabs, but you would have to qualify that by explaining we are not talking about some dodgy after-the-pubdoner kebab, but something more akin to the delicious, tender, marinated shish kebabs in authentic Greek and Turkish cuisine. Malaysian Satay consists of marinated meat or vegetables, cooked and served on wooden skewers and covered in a traditional savoury peanut sauce. Satay is a popular Malaysian snack often consumed as a street food.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/avlxyz/3579349613/

#2 Rendang Curries

For something more substantial for a sit-down meal, consider any one of several distinctive Malaysian curries, which each feature their own blend of curry spices. Recipes are often closely guarded family secrets and passed from generation to generation, so everyone has their own unique recipe. Added to subtle differences in the natural ingredients mean no two dishes ever turn out the same. Rendang curries are semi-dry curries slow-cooked in the oven or on the stove-top so the coconut and spices melt into a delicious sauce smothering tender chunks of lamb or beef.Perfect for a special occasion.

#3 Cucumber Salad

In a warm climate vegetables are plentiful and light dishes are often appreciated. Cucumber salad is a tangy and typically Malaysian side dish that is a refreshing addition to any meal and, in keeping with the strong Buddhist tradition in Malaysia, is suitable for vegetarians. You can try this at home using stronger-tasting, small cucumbers, peeled and tossed in a mixture of sugar, rice, vinegar, chilli oil and sesame oil.

#4 Lime-Coconut Swordfish

There could hardly be a dish more quintessentially Malaysian, which shows off the strengths and distinctive flavours of Malaysian cuisine. Lime, coconut, and fresh fish of all kinds are essential Malaysian flavours, imparting sweet and sour qualities, freshness and a light quality.

You could try making this dish at home, but by the time you have bought the ingredients it’s probably cheaper to book yourself into a Malaysian restaurant, especially if you can find yourself an online deal for a restaurant offering authentic Malaysian food. Why cook one dish for yourself when you can sample the full range of Malaysian cuisine?

http://www.flickr.com/photos/joyosity/856724584/

#5 NasiGoreng

Malaysian NasiGoreng, or fried rice, is one of the staples of Malaysian food. It will be the perfect accompaniment to any of the above. You just need to find yourself a dinner companion now!

Cameron Valley Tea Bangsar - a place to watch out for

Cameron Valley - the mere mention of the name conjures warm images of tea and scones enjoyed in picturesque cool highland settings amidst undulating fertile hillsides with flourishing tea gardens.Ahhh.

The Cameron Valley tea experience has now been brought down to KL - with a whole new casual dining concept. The flagship Cameron Valley tea outlet on Telawi 5 Bangsar ( same stretch as McDonalds) is unmissable as it stands out on the pavement and invites people into a relaxing dining atmosphere much like its predecessor the Cameron Valley tea shops. Here diners can sample the wide array of 100% Malaysian highland tea with it's distinctive taste and quality. Tea beverages served hot and cold include Classic Tea, Local & House Specialities, Fruit Flavoured Tea, Healthy Infused Tea, Tea Floats and Tea Smoothies, all made with the distinctive Cameron Valley tea.

All- day dining options are healthy and delicious selections of signature Salads, Doughnut Sandwiches, Sandwiches, Pastas, Main Courses, Snacks, Cakes, Puff Pastries and Scones. Only natural, fresh ingredients such as olive oil, fresh herbs and home-made sauces with no MSG are used in the carefully-crafted meals. For avid tea lovers, Cameron Valley tea packs in various flavours, merchandise and souvenirs are available for purchase. Thanks to Cameron Valley Tea Bangsar - we don't need to travel all the way to Cameron Highlands to buy our fav teas anymore!

I tried their signature Loaded Doughnut Sandwich after a special promo (called the Feast off) they had on FB where fans could vote the dish they wanted to have at 20% off - and free tea to boot! All i can say is - i'm still thinking about the de-li-cious crunch of the doughnut against the meaty, cheesy filling....mmm. It is a MUST try. Another surprise was the Strawberry Teh Tarik - went against my grain and ordered that, and what a good decision it was.

Check Cameron Valley tea out at http://www.facebook.com/CameronValley for great meals and deals. Thy also have an FB tuesday evening promo deal with free drinks for ladies - but you need to get the password from their FB page every Tuesday - worth the effort i say!

I hear they're opening new branches soon - not sure when or where - but sure am looking forward to it.

No cheating - the community speaks.

During this past holidays there was a lot of Arabs in KL from all parts of the middle east. Someone stopped me on the street and asked me in Arabic if I know I place where is a restaurant that serves kabsa, one good meal i forgot about till then. Now I wanted know where to find good kabsa.

Kabsa is the main dish in Saudi Arabia, some say it was originated in Yemen and the Yemenis brought it over with them when they migrated to Saudi, but no one really knows, its basicly long gran besmety rice and meat, but its not as simple as it sounds, it contain a large variety of species and herbs.

Kabsa is cooked with cloves, black pepper, saffron, bay leaves, cinnamon, black lime, cardamom, pine nuts, shaved or split almonds, wall nuts, split and roasted hazel nuts, raisins, and nutmeg. And that is just some of the herbs to just mixed with the rice.

But main celebrity in this, is the meat. Usually lamb, goat or camel are favored. Beef, chicken, fish, and the shrimp are not on the top of the guest list.

Various ways of cooking used for the meat, one of the most ancient technique mandi, that is where they dig a hole on the ground, and burn a lot of wood in it till you can’t look or be near the hole, that is how hot the bit needs to be to get it started. Then you drop the meat in and Barrie in the ground. Another method is mathbi, where the meat is grilled on flat stone that is placed on top of burning wood after marinating. Or steamed under pressure. but really at the end of the day, it takes a lot of love to make it right.

Luckly we didnt have to go too far, so we got to know one another over some good kabsa.

Photo by Tassike.ee - Marju Randmer

A lady knocked on my door on a Sunday morning, few days after i moved in to this nice neighbourhood, it was my next-door neighbour with a plate of hummus in her hands, didn’t think people knew about it in southeast parts of the US. So I invited her in for a cup of coffee. Not just because she was beautiful, but the fumes of the hummus she made was like one from home. And it was a nice topic till latter that afternoon.

Hummus tahini or tahini bel hummus, is the actual name, Hummus is an Arabic word meaning ‘chickpeas’, but it is not the only main ingredient, sesame is part of the mixture too, that is where the tahini comes from. There is more then 8 ways to spell it in English but you can go any wear in Europe, north or America and now in SE Asia and ask for it by name.

Although chickpeas is described as a very ancient food. In Egypt Abbasid period holds the first recordings of a cold served pureed chickpeas, sesame, yogurt, lemon, garlic, mint leaves, cumin it was always used with the cooked hot food, but never cold.

One of the most interesting things about ‘Hummus Tahini’, is its highly nutritional value. With iron, vitamin C, chickpeas are also High on protein, dietary fiber and B6 vitamin. The tahini or sesame seeds however hold the amino acid and fats, to go with the protein from the chickpeas. Sounds like its very useful meal for both vegetarian and vegan diets, served with warm thin bread.

As a dip,I like scooping up the hummus with flat bread, Garnish can be as little as black olives and olive oil or paprika, but it also comes with tomato, cucumber, cilantro, parsley, sauteed mushrooms, whole chickpeas, pickles pine nuts or shaved almonds,Or spread on a flat pita bread.

Hummus is a play a role on the Palestinian and the Israeli table, just not on the peace table,l since all the ingredients is found easily in there own back yard and market, but served hot.

Hot or cold, for a short time i spent in the neighbourhood, I enjoyed the southern food the people the hummus and my next-door neighbour.

Tabbouleh..one stop meal

<img src="http://www.goeatout.com.my/Portals/0/images/food-talks/tabbouleh-salad-1.jpg"width="300" height="225">

Something about Tabbouleh that make's me hungry for more, even after eating, I just can't let go of the plate with any thing in it. I tried for so long to make out what goes in it, but I get distracted by the heavenly taste.

Tabbouleh is an Arabic word means that 'little spicy'. Coming out of Lebanon and Syria, this amazing starter salad has taken over the entire Middle East by storm, in the last 20 years or so, as more people started travelling. It is made from bulgur, onion, garlic, tomato, cucumber, chopped parsley and mint. Seasoned with olive oil, lemon juice, salt and much more.

It all starts with the scent of the mint, lemon and olive oil that releases a dazzling aroma. Once in your mouth, you start to feel the thinly diced vegetables and the bulgur tangling around. It's crisp and feels sandy-like at times, because of the cut ends of the fresh parsley and bulgur. Then, it all blends in so smoothly.

Tabbouleh salad is an excellent source of nutrition from high protein levels to dietary fibres and carbohydrates, which makes it ideal for lunch on a hot day or a very healthy snack. It's also perfect for vegetarians.

Every Middle Eastern home has there own style of Tabbouleh. Despite the regional differences and the where abouts of the ingredients, Tabouleh will always be served cold. Best over romaine lettuce with a few slices of pita, Arabian-style bread. There are other salads, more like dips, that are served cold as well.

Hummus for example, is a cream-like paste made out of chickpeas tahina and yogurt. It's served cold or hot and topped with olive oil and lemon juice. Hummus dissolves in you mouth instantly and without effort. Having both dishes as an appetizer sets the stage for a magnificent experience.

I remember when I was growing up. My mother started to make Tabbouleh, it was consuming for her and it was hard to get her attention. She didn't get it right at first, but she managed after a few attempts to make one of the best Tabbouleh I ever had. After that, the hard part was to keep me out of the kitchen.

When my family lived in Riyadh” Saudi Arabia” I was a in my early teen years. So the boys and I use to drive our bicycles around city. We went everywhere, from public parks to malls, there was a lot to see, and good exercise. We always had diner out on the weekends and tried something different every time. One day We found this Turkish restaurant, but we can only afford the shawarma, so we walked and asked the for 5 sandwiches, And we wear eating shawarma for a longtime to come.

Shawrama is an Arabian style sandwich-like wrap or taco, usually made out of lamb, chicken, goat, but you can get beef or turkey too sometimes. It's a Turkish name commonly used in the Middle East. However in Turkey it is called döner keba, 'turning kebab', in Greece it's called gyros means 'to turn', and Armenians, call it tarna, meaning to turn.

And although shawerma, gyros,döner keba, and tarna share some similarity in few ways, they are not the same thing, when it comes to preparation and taste, they are worlds a part. Shawerma is made by stacking strips of marinated meat on a stick, and placing it in-front of or no top of a fair, roasting it slowly. Sometimes the stick is set horizontally on top of a pit-fire, but most of the time it is cooked in the towering stand you usually see outside the restaurant.

While cooking, thin slices of meat is shaved off the rotating stick, landing on an oval tray underneath, then scooped, and wrapped in a warm or flat bread or pita, with sliced tomato, shredded lettuce, cucumber, cucumber sauce or garlic sauce and a pickle. Or on a plate with opened flat bread, served next to French fries or a side of tabbouleh.

Till this day, in Malaysia or wherever you gonna be in the world, shawarma is one of fast the favorable snacks you can get. But to me it will always remind me of me good friends.

Arabian Style Kebab In Kuala Lumpur

As I'm walking down one of the most touristic streets of KL (Bukit Bintang), a strong smell drew my attention and reminded me of my childhood. As a treat at the end of the weekend, my father used to take me and my sisters to this Arabian-style restaurant in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. It was one of the advantages of living in a diverse capitol. And that was the case again in Malaysia.

And I felt like treating myself, I wanted to have the experience of an Arabian diner. The fumes of kapsa mandy beryani lamb or chicken are severed with different types of rise, which makes it hard to choose. I finally made up my mind and picked the Syrian kebab.

Or kebab halabi, that is Syrian cuisine which is a diffusion of the cultures that lived in Syria, during and after the Islamic era, with the Persian-influenced and ending with the recent influences of Turkish cuisine, it is in many ways similar to other cuisines, mainly Lebanese and Palestinian.

Kebab halabi is made out of lamb meat taken from the shoulders and ribs then minced the meat with a knife or in a machine which is a longer process. Following by adding some onion, garlic, fresh parsley, sea salt, other herbs and lamb fat to give it rich flavor which make it extra juicy. Leave the mix outside for 30 minutes to settle like pizza dough. Finally, let it grill to perfection over a bed of slowly burning charcoal.

The smoke kept my mouth watering while I was served the appetizers. I dipped slowly so I wouldn't fill up on this amazing variety of dips. Then, the kebab halabi arrived over freshly baked pita bread, Arabian style. Afterwards, I asked for a mint tea in a short glass, that is how you have it in the Middle East.

Throughout the different regions of the Middle East there are many ways to make kebab. Sometimes it's small cubes of tender loin marinated and grilled. That is the case in Egypt. In other regions tomatoes or eggplant might be added to the dough-like mix, giving the kebab higher nutritional value or flavor. Preparing a delicious kebab, takes a lot of love and care...

I just love kebab! Malaysian Food.

Shorter name to find food!

After years of searching the owner of goeatout.com, we finally found the owner via facebook! After some usual bargaining, we have successfully bought over the .com domain.

Although we thought about switching .com.my to .com, this will involve a lot of technical issues and has a great influence on our future strategic planning as well. So, right now we just did a simple domain forwarding for goeatout.com to be forwarded to goeatout.com.my

In fact if you're using firefox, you just need to type in "goeatout" in the URL bar and you will be redirected to this website :)

On the other hand, Internet Explorer 6 users have been reducing dramtically in the quarter and we are going to join IE6 Countdown event where GoEatOut will no longer support old browsers in short future. So go ahead to download a new browser now! for your own good.
