The History of Capricciosa

The founder of Capricciosa, Masaaki Honda, travelled across the oceans in 1962 to pursue his own dream. This is a success story of him and his legacy, “Capricciosa”

The founder of Capricciosa – Masaaki Honda was fascinated by the culture and food of Italy and he travelled across the vast oceans to Italy in 1962 to pursue his own dream of becoming the best chef in Italian cuisine. Upon arrival, there were hardly any Japanese chefs in Italy during that period. Honda attended the prestigious National Culinary Academy of Italy honing his skills with a burning passion and relentless effort, he won numerous awards in prestigious contests around Europe.

Receiving recognition from the Italian government, he became a culinary ambassador as a chef at the Italian Pavilion Café at the World Expo held in Japan in March of 1970, and after a year of serving his distinguished role, he went back to Japan. Upon returning home, Honda fulfilled his dream in demonstrating his creative talent through numerous Italian restaurants in Japan which he worked in.

In the spring time of 1978 when Masaaki Honda was 34 years old, he opened his first Italian restaurant – a 213 square feet in the outskirts of Shibuya, Tokyo. This tiny place became the flagship of Capricciosa! With Honda’s exquisite culinary skills and the attractiveness of offering great authentic Italian flavors and serving generous portions at affordable prices soon helped Capricciosa to become one of the most popular restaurants with long queues of curious locals as well as foreigners. Four years later, he relocated to its current flagship location – a 712 square feet premise with a 40-seat capacity, overflowing with customers all the time.

Everyday Honda would stand in the kitchen doorway anxious to see his customers’ satisfied and delighted expressions. Just to hear the word “delicious”, “wonderful” or wanting to meet him from many guests has given him a renewed desire in creating new exciting dishes and maintaining consistency. With his passion being conveyed through his recipes, Honda continues to amaze his loyal as well as new customers and we will continue to bring his story and living legacy, “capricciosa” to the world!
